artist: black quilting from Gee`s Bend.
Though Gee`s Bend is acknowledged as being a special corner for an amazing batch of quilting clearly continuing the african signs of the past, there are numerous quilters all around america who also followed similar patterns. Still this post is to introduce the first quilts that I saw myself in Ginza, Tokyo several years ago. It was then that I knew that the art movements of Black people had not been explained properly or connected to people like myself. We are not isolated experiences. We are a continuum.
a silent art movement done in protest of white oppression and to (unconsciously) retain and celebrate the african memories nearly destroyed by slavery.
